Mall Rat {Studio J}

This is my secret name for this layout. Shh, don't tell Brook! (I don't want to scar her for life with my outdated vernacular, at least, not any more than I already have.) It's said with affection!

My sweet baby girl is growing up so fast! These pictures of Brook are from a few years ago, just after she turned seven. Seven is Heaven! They are a collection of random shots of her being girly over a few months that summer that just didn't go with anything else. Together, they paint the picture of a pre-tween tomboy who is just starting to pay attention to girl stuff (but don't tell anyone).

The focal shot is of Brook on a girls outing at the mall - just the two of us and no boys. In our house, this a real rarity! Brook was so excited to be doing Mall Stuff. We shopped (and bought!) just for her, we found some gifts for others and we had an Orange Julius at the food court which is what I remember most about being a kid and going to the mall. It became a tradition of my best friend and I to hit the Hello Kitty store and have an Orange Julius (remember when you used to be able to go places alone as a kid?)

When I met Brandon, he would always have a fresh, hot pretzel, so that became a tradition for us that we have shared with our kids as a family. For me and my princess, though, we did the girl thang and got Juliuses! Enjoy the moments.

Warm wishes,

P.S. - Don't forget Cyber Monday lasts through 11:59pm!

Small Business Saturday and a Layout {Studio J}

The Mortons in Avonlea, inspired by Karen Pedersen.
Welcome to Small Business Saturday! What is Small Business Saturday? Let Wikipedia enlighten us:
Small Business Saturday is an American shopping holiday held on the Saturday after Thanksgiving during one of the busiest shopping periods of the year. First celebrated on November 27, 2010, it is a counterpart to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, which feature big box retail and e-commerce stores respectively. By contrast, Small Business Saturday encourages holiday shoppers to patronize brick and mortar businesses that are small and local.
I appreciate your patronage this day especially and invite you to stop by my Brick and Mortar for a spell and some great Black Friday fun, still going on through the end of Cyber Monday. Go here to see what exclusive hourly deals I have to offer today in thanks!

Along with Mom & Pop shops, comes Family. This is one of those typical family portraits for photographers. Since we are usually behind the lens, it can be a challenge to get a good shot of your family with you actually in it (the self-timer option is our friend). You're at somebody's wedding (in this case, my niece, Paige's) and the setting is beautiful, so you gather the family and ask someone to take your picture and hope for the best! Will everybody be looking at the camera, did the makeshift photographer frame it up right, are your faces now in shadow? I find these can be very frustrating if you let them. So I don't!

Now, I find they are the best portraits of our family and often reveal the real McCoy (in this case, Garrett). He's such a character! If anyone is going to be doing something off, it will be him. Mind you, he's only three, so it's okay. It reminds me of the many years previous when it was first Brook, then Aidan who gave this photographer grief. I'm learning to let it go, finally, and just enjoy the moments! I hope you have had or will have many moments this weekend as you celebrate within your own friends and family all the wonderful ideas and character that has made this nation great. Give thanks for the American Dream and thanks for stopping by!

Warm wishes,

Powdered Garrett {Studio J}

Some days, you just have to scrap the bad with the good. I foresee a lot of these moments in my 3rd child's memory book. Despite his penchant for mischief, he is one cute kid. And it's a good thing.

This layout was a fun challenge I made for myself. Kind of like the challenge presented daily as a parent of Garrett. But I digress. Since we are working with Flirty this month I wanted to use that to start. This color combo screamed girl to me when I first saw it. So what better way to think outside of the box than to use this paper pack for one of my boys! With the deep boldness of Flirty Raspberry prevalent all through, it seemed an impossible task, my dear Watson.

Not to fear. Luckily, these pictures surfaced at just the right time. With the characteristic stylized colors of the typical cell phone camera, my honey oak cabinets morphed into a supernatural chartreuse, reminiscent of the surreal green cast left on film by florescent lighting (or a terrible cell phone camera with low-lighting. I'm just sayin'.)

I had a lot of fun with type on this layout. I absolutely love creative lettering. I wish I had more time and patience to work on this art, because it's so much fun! (Yes, Virginia, I am a font-a-holic.) Subway Art is very much IN right now with a capital I and I took my cue for the age and date blocks from that. I love mixing different font types and sizes so this type of art really appeals to me. Ok, enough with the blah, blah. Switch up the colors on a standard layout kit and nix a bunch of the embellishments because we're guys here. Totally masculine, even with the Flirty Raspberry!

As a side note, I do hope I won't have to do too many more of these similar layouts. (Have mercy.)

Warm wishes,

The Mr. and Mrs {Bridal Shower}

As I told you yesterday, this is the second card I made for my niece, Paige's, bridal shower. You can not believe how dang easy this card was! As a mom of four, I am all about the time-saving now and this card won't let you down - if you have the secret ingredient! I won't keep you hanging *much*, but watch this video first. It tells you all about the August Love Your Layout in Studio J.

Wow, I just love Avonlea more and more every day! And Studio J is such a lifesaver, too, especially for those of us who may be, um, a little *behind*.

Ok, enough blather. The secret ingredient? Cricut Artiste! Here's the deets. I cut the Mr&Mrs in black cardstock at 4 1/4" (that's the height, not the width). Now, I need to make the base fit, so I measured and then cut the card at 5 1/2" out of White Daisy cardstock. Adhere the black to the white, then tie a cranberry ribbon in a bow and secure with a dab of Liquid Glass to mimic the "tux" on the "Mr." Then grab your Bitty Pearl Opaques and add 5 self-adhesive pearl "buttons" to the "Mrs." for the "dress". To attach the card to the basket I punched a hole in the corner and tied some Cranberry Twine to turn it into a cute tag, complete with my best wishes on the back. Oh, Snap! Baby, it doesn't get any easier than this! (You can slap me now for calling you baby.)

Artiste has plenty of fun sentiments for all your occasions, too, so don't let a lil' ol' bridal shower slow you down. There's baby, holiday and everyday sentiments among the almost 700 images on the cartridge. You ain't seen nothin' yet. Come to my Open House, this Saturday, August 25th from 1p - 4p and play around with the Cricut. You'll never look back.

In the Spirit of Giving

I'll first appologize for being gone so long. Life has a knack of getting in the way sometimes. Between working full time at 911 and chasing a 2-legged-3-year-old-demolition-crew in my spare time, I've been one busy mom! Here are two great Gives- a layout about Christmas and a gift.
I was blessed to get a few spare hours to scrapbook last night (because really, how important IS sleep?) and wanted to share it with you. Since I've been so busy with my two full time jobs ;) I've had precious little craft time and I relished it for the small miracle that it was! I don't foresee it getting better anytime soon, either, as my desk will soon fill with homework and half-finished art projects as school begins in a month. (Crazy SCARY!)
Long story short (oops, too late..) I've been trying to catch all my prints up this year and clean the last straggling layouts-to-be out of my stash. I made the best decision ever last year to use Studio J, Close To My Heart's online scrabook software, to do the bulk of my layouts this year so I could scrapbook stress-free and get it done in a snap! Still loving this decision!
This is the second thing I've been working on: a quilt for my youngest son. One of the many crazy endeavors I embarked on this spring to get myself some mad homemaking Skillz. (I know, I never start small. Wait till you see my other project!)
I took a quilting class with my mom in March based solely on a whim to walk through a little quilting shop I hadn't been in (age deleted...) since I walked through as a little girl with my mother. Incidentally she doesn't quilt either.
I saw this quilt and had to have it! I have three boys and knew they would dearly love it! I decided to give it to my youngest who doesn't have a quilt of his own and you'll never guess how much whining and pandemonium THAT decision caused (or how many new projects I suddenly acquired!)
It's all ready to be quilted and bound now and I'm so excited! This is one of the only craft projects (okay, besides papercrafting) which I've actually finished! (Think the crocheted 12" doll dress from 1986 and... hmm.) Well, anyway, it's not important. This is Convoy from Buggy Barn ala Trish. Hope you can carve out some craft time for yourself (cuz after reading this novel, you'll have precious little) and have a great summer!

Cheetos and Trouble {Studio J}

Can you see I love My Reflections Manmade? With 4 boys in the family it seems to be useful for a lot of my photos! And speaking of boys, here are two of my favorite! This two-page layout could easily be turned into 2 separate one-page layouts in Studio J. And I admit I kind of had that idea when I started. But after I placed all my photos and then added an extra journalling box, I couldn't resist adding the title "Two Boys."

Despite being totally separate events about separate kids, there seemed to be a unity in theme, "What's going on now?" Aidan's page talks about one afternoon where it really hit me how much we had been counting - everything - over the past few weeks. Garrett's shirt says, "Trouble is my middle name." Both sets of photos brought to mind the milestones each child was making at their particular age, and it telegraphed into the journalling. (You can click on the photo and see the enlarged version to read the journalling.)

Studio J is an online Scrapbooking software and is totally free to play with. Check it out here. You don't have to commit to anything to play, just a user name and password so your projects can be saved for you. This layout can be completed in Studio J in about 15 minutes and can be two one-page layouts or a two-page layout. If you'd like to join my 30 minute online Studio J Class or host a Studio J Class in your home, please contact me (801.910.8698, slvrlinin@live.com). Easy peasy!

Five Mile Pass {Studio J}

Here's a fun layout featuring an exclusive members-only My Reflections kit in Studio J, Manmade. It's rough and tumble and perfectly illustrates the boys (and girls!) in our house! (You can read more about becoming a member here and  here - and you can try Studio J Online scrapbooking suite here for free. Only pay when you print!)

Four wheels are better than two whenever possible, whether it's in the truck or on the ATVs. Last spring we went out for a little evening drive to an area just southwest of us about 45 min. A lot of people come here to play in the dirt and we certainly shamed none of 'em! Gram and Papa came with us so it was truly a family affair! Brandon just put new knobby tires on and wanted to try them out, so we piled in and away we went!

Thanks for stopping by and I hope you can get out and play!

Warm wishes,

Happy Birthday My Love {Studio J}

This page is dedicated to my man, my main squeeze, my partner in crime, Brandon. Yeah. I know he's not pictured here. (He hates his picture being taken.) This is what he gets to wake up to every day.. one perfect princess, one tough guy an adorable baby and ... the three year old. (Garrett :)

He's an amazing man to deal with these crazy kids (did I mention Garrett is THREE?) and keep this household running like a well-oiled machine while I am working all day. The amazing thing is he's still sane *mostly* and he loves them all to pieces. Happy birthday to the best Daddy and Husband ever! I love you so much and I am so privileged to spend this life with you now and forever!

(This page was a particularly difficult morning for the then-two year old, Garrett. These pictures, taken by Brandon, perfectly captured the feeling of getting up too early because Aidan was just a little too loud waking and couldn't resist getting his brother up to *help* with breakfast. You gotta love it. One day we will. Right? ~Lol)

Page created in the Studio J Online Srapbooking suite here using My Reflections Roughing It.

Summer Means Disneyland Right?

Ok, not for us this year, but for many families, summer vacation means a trip to the great unknown ..or a more beloved tradition like Disneyland. While we are not going again this year (need to wait until Colt gets a few years on him!) we can easily reminisce about the wonderful trip we had as we finish creating our Disneyland album from December 2010 in Studio J. We took the family to California for our Christmas present to each other and it was one of the best things we have ever done for our loved ones! I highly recommend it if you get the chance (though the traditionalist in me had a hard time with 70s and no snow in December!)

Before we get to the next layout though, let me quickly tell you the best thing ever: It's Stampaganza time at Close To My Heart! I know! Isn't it just fabulous?! For every 2 A, B, C, D, or E-sized stamp sets you buy during the month of June, you can get a third of equal or lesser value FREE! You heard it, sistah! Stop on over to my website to shop 24/7 or contact me (801.910.8698, slvrlinin@live.com) to put you down! LOVE IT! Okay, now back to the creatin'!

I just have to say, one of the very best attributes of Studio J (aside from it's ease of use for beginners to scrap-masters) is that you can use any kit from the past few years, even if they're retired. Route 66 couldn't have been more perfect for a trip to Radiator Springs!
All of these layouts were created very quickly using the preexisting template provided for in the kit pattern. If you want to customize, you simple click on the Embellishments tab and toggle off the embellishments on the page. This will "hide" those ready made-ready placed buttons, metals and ribbons that come ready to color on each and every kit. I love the freedom you have to do it your way - fast, easy or fussy!

Have a great summer vacation somewhere (even on your own back porch) and photograph it!

Warm wishes,

A Jack of All Trades {Studio J}

This is a fun paper kit that is for Studio J members only. I love its spunk and find so many uses for the numbers and simple black and white crossword paper. Because I was planning my journalling over the pattern paper on the second page, I wanted something a little more neutral but comparable to the look of the crossword, so it would match the photos. I found a fix in the green colored plaid background and texture paper. Now, I didn't want green in all my black white and red photos, so I changed the color of the pattern paper to black and voila! A perfect complement to my black cardstock base and Cranberry accents, and it's still light enough for the journalling to be legible. This feature is one of the things I love about Studio J and why I think it makes it such a versatile tool for anybody with any level of skills. In fact, you can read a quick how-to on the Studio J blog here.

This layout takes about 15 minutes to complete and you can get it plus 4 more layouts like it for free this month when you purchase a Studio J 5 pack during February's Constant Campaign. That's 10 layouts for the price of 5! You don't have to make new ones - you can just add some completed projects to your cart and then apply your 5 Pack code. To get your code, contact me today!

Warm wishes,

Christmas in March

... sort of. Last year for Christmas we gave my parents some tickets to Les Miserables. The company was going to be on tour here in Salt Lake and of course I wanted to go (it's one of my favorites). Mom wanted to go. It seemed like a good excuse for a Christmas gift! Sadly, I thought I had reserved seats in December - and hadn't. So when the announcement came that the tickets were on a pre-sale - I ignored it. I had my tickets. Well.... no. It was terrible, but by the time I figured it out I had missed the window of opportunity, they were sold out. Ugh. There goes my awesome gift and awesome evening with Mom.

Luckily, Mom being Mom, she was willing to *settle* for Riverdance, lol. It just so happened they were detouring through and I was able to secure some seats for us. Dad wanted to go, too. Ok, so maybe he felt a little obligated (Brandon bowed out with the excuse he's seen it before - believe it or not, he has. LIVE.-but redeemed himself when he agreed to watch the kids).

My Mom used to work for Ballet West before I was born and always loves going to the theater - no matter what kind. We had so much fun telling tales about all the shenanigans behind the scenes at Capitol Theatre. We laughed about the artistic director's wife, Mrs. Christensen (Mrs. C, as she was known by the company), and how she always had to sit in the Orchestra section right under the spotlight in the center. That way when the lights went up for the curtain, she was perfectly highlighted.

All in all, no matter the venue, we had a great evening - even Dad! (You can see the text of the page by clicking on the image to enlarge it.) Date night with the parents. Who'd have thought?

Warm wishes,
PS- Don't forget you can get 10 layouts for the price of 5 all through February! See more about that here.

It's Elemental

Silliness, that is! In celebration of the Studio J 5-pack deal this month, I created this layout in 15 minutes to show you how awesome Online Scrapbooking is using our My Reflections Elemental paper kit! Whether you need to catch up (a year or ten...) QUICK, like the ease of dragging and dropping your digital prints into a beautiful scrapbook layout or don't have the room to have your very own scrapbook room complete with overflowing shelves of items you've never used (but look VERY PRETTY on  the shelves) then Studio J is for you. Take a look-see on my website to see if it works for you. You can make this layout or any others-as many as you want- and never buy until you're ready to print! If you want to print - then go HERE to get February's awesome special - buy 5, get 5 FREE! It's Elemental.

Now here's a great tip. You can make this cool layout for members only to use as the "bookends" of your book! The family photo was taken for our Christmas cards last year and can go in the last page of my 2011 Album. The right layout is a picture of the kids on New Year's Eve banging their pots and pans on the porch at 0' midnight hours!

This layout is called "No Limits" and is basically 2 12x12 photographs. I wanted the family picture to stand on it's own, but for the 2012 opener, I added some My Stickease from the Elemental kit and some text. Totally custom digital photo! I have so many plans for this kit. You'll have to stay tuned to see some of them later this month in Colt's baby book!

This layout works well at making 12x12 enlargements for DIRT CHEAP as a Studio J member and I am going to mount my kids' photos on a 12x12 artist canvas to hang on my wall in my hall - something I've wanted to do for EVER. With Studio J, you can even add their names and ages in any of our 60 color fonts and edit your photos all at once. Liven it up with some My Stickease from your favorite kit like I did for the 2012 page. This layout has literally NO LIMITS to your creativity. Learn more about becoming a Studio J member and all of the fabulous benefits (hint: 50% off every order!) by calling, emailing or texting me today!

Warm wishes,
